Do smileys for Mac depend on OS version?

I am running OS X Lion and I cannot seem to get smiley's for my email working.

Is it possible that smiley's for mac depend on which OS you are running?

The reason I am asking this is that when I Google I see some users running OS X Leopard saying they can put smiley's in their emails without any issues.

Hello there Weary, 

I have read that you're having a problem with your smiley pack for apple mac, and I don't think the OS version affects the smiley pack that you have directly but yes it could because there are several smiley or icons pack that are built for the newer version therefore if you have a lower version of OSx and trying to use a smiley pack for mountain lion i don't think this will really work. You can easily get your right smiley pack on AppStore and have it working in a matter of minutes.
