Do I need iTunes on my iPad to update?

When an update becomes available for my iPad the iTunes automatically download and install it on my computer system. If that is the case, do I need to have iTunes on my iPad to install all updates?

When you first get a new iPod, you'll need to install iTunes to get started. iTunes allows you to import, play, and buy music, and sync your tunes with your iPod or Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod and open iTunes if it is not already open.

Hello Oscar,

iTunes are installed in the iPad or iPod when the device is new to help you get started. It enables the devices to be configured as required for them to install updates, music, videos or applications and helps the user to sync with other devices or use USB with the device.

To update any application on an iPad or iPod, you just need to have an active internet connection then go to software updates, download and install the available updates you are interested in. iTunes are also used to update the iPad but are usually used when the available storage memory is low or not enough to accommodate the update.

I thought you are asking if you can update iTunes on your iPad. Anyway, if your iPad alerts you for new updates, it is up to you if you want to install it or not. If the device is working properly and you don’t experience any problem, you can opt to not update the device.

But for security purposes and performance enhancements, it is recommended that you install all updates. The updates can make your device function more properly because it contains fixes to bugs found before the update was released. When the bugs are fixed, the device can function more properly therefore improving its performance.

Now, for users who wonder if they can update the iTunes on their iPad, I don’t think so. You don’t update iTunes on your iPad because there’s no way to update it. When Apple releases an update for the iOS, the pre-installed apps are updated together with the iOS. You cannot update them by yourself.

If you receive a message that you need to update iTunes for you to sync your iPad, it means you need to update iTunes on your computer and not the iTunes on your iPad.
