While trying to run Disk Cleanup in windows xp, the program can go to the first three bars and when it checks the files and then stops there, no movement. If I restart this process, it never comes up totally

Do This.

Now click Export in the file menu then click Desktop type VolumeCaches in the name box then save it.

This create backup of VolumeCaches registry key so that in case you experience instability in your computer you can just restore VolumeCaches key by double clicking the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop then click yes.

Now expand the following registry key:

No, it just works that way. You think it got frozen after reaching only three bars but it is actually processing the files. The first time you start Disk Cleanup, you will see “Calculating” displayed on the dialog and only three bars are displayed in the progress bar. This is normal especially if you don’t run the tool frequently.

If your machine is poorly maintained, it will take a lot longer to pass this screen. Just wait until the scanning is complete. When scanning is finished, in “Disk Cleanup” tab, select or check the items you wish to clean. You can see the total size of the item on the right. Just select the items you want to clean then click “OK” to begin the cleanup.

If you select or checked “Compress old files”, Disk Cleanup will compress old files in your system which makes the entire process very long. Check this item only if you wish to compress old files and you can wait patiently.
