Microsoft Office PowerPoint is a program for slideshow presentation that was launched on May 22, 1990 as part of the Microsoft Office suite. It was developed by Microsoft but actually was originally designed for Mac OS X. Microsoft Office PowerPoint was originally called Presenter during its initial release which was then developed by Thomas Rudkin and Dennis Austin from Forethought, Inc.
When 1987 came and due to trademark issues, Presenter was renamed to PowerPoint. The idea for the new label came from Robert Gaskins. In August of the same year, Microsoft purchased Forethought, Inc. for $14 million USD. If the agreement will be done today, the present cost will be $29.1 million USD.
The acquisition made it Microsoft’s Graphics Business Unit which further continued developing the application. The official release date of Microsoft Office PowerPoint is also the same day when Microsoft released Windows 3.0. The release of PowerPoint 97 presented various new modifications to the software. It added the VBA language or the Visual Basic for Applications.
Different versions of Microsoft Office PowerPoint claim about 95 percent of the presentation software market share as of 2012 with installations in no less than 1 billion computers. If you’ll compare it with other presenters around the world, the approximate rate the application is used is around 350 times per second.
