Whenever I played video with Windows Media Player, I am getting this error message “Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.” I cannot play any videos due to this error. I am using Compaq CQ20-213T with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. Can someone help me in this matter?

Hi,

I think this error “Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.” is all about the video driver. Do you have video driver installed in your system? Please check first then pm me back.

Hello Leigh

I would like to tell you that you should uninstall the earlier video drivers and reinstall them again by downloading latest driver from the nvidia website if you are using nvidia GPU.After downloading just install the drivers and restart your system. You would be able to play videos after this.If this did not help then just try to download the codecs which might be missing from your media player.Just download them and install them, restart your system and you are ready to play videos on your Windows Media Player.I hope this would have helped.

thank you

I am wondering how you got this error on your Windows XP machine, since this usually occurs on the Ubuntu system. Anyway, if you are using Win XP, try to download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack from the link below.

If you are using Ubuntu, specify the video output driver by typing the command below:

mplayer -vo xv video.wmv

To get a list of the available video output drivers, type mplayer -vo help.
