I have a HP laptop that I have used for a while, however lately the battery icon does not indicate and this has been a reason for concern because I cannot know what charge levels the battery is while operating the laptop. How can this be rectified? Is there a way that the battery can show progress of drainage other than through this icon?

There are two certain reasons why your battery level is not indicating on your laptop. Either your battery is damaged or your adapter is faulty. When an adapter is faulty is only capable of powering the laptop but it can not charge the laptop's battery hence when you unplug it the laptop goes off after a few minutes.  Similarly if the battery is faulty, it will go off after you unplug the charger. Try using another charger to see if it will charge. If it does not, you will need to replace your battery.
