Hi Simon,

In order to manage the computers connected in a home network, the best network management and monitoring software is Network Magic Pro.

It can make your network management and monitoring tasks simple and easy by creating a dynamic interactive map allowing you to view each network and also shows the status of connected devices. It also,

  • Supports devices such as network storage devices, cameras, VOIP adapters etc.
  • It allows you to choose which devices to share with other network users. Although you cannot specifically allow access to each user.
  • The Network activity log feature allows you to monitor the users who have logged on, the devices added and dropped connections.
  • It allows you to keep your home network safe with WPA (wireless protection access) encryption. It also supports WEP and WPA/2 security. Any attempts by an intruder to log on are shown as an alert and you have the ability to ban such intruders.
  • In case any issues related to connectivity arise, a wizard launches allowing you to solve the problem on step by step basis.
  • It supports all versions of Windows Vista, Xp and windows 7 as well as Mac OS.
  • Free online support is provided for a period of 1 year after you purchase Network Magic Pro.

The only back draw for this software is individual access to users for specific devices, other than that it is a perfect network management and monitoring software and is highly recommended for a home network.

Hope that helps.

There are thousands of free softwares to manage your home network, but here are the ones I personally use and would recommend:

Xenoss

Vollectd (this is a great manager but a bit difficult to use)

Cacti

Nagios

Monit (this one is easy and great)

I hope this helps. If you don't like any of these, feel free to ask and I will suggest more. Thanks and have a great day.
