Can somebody please give me an idea about the meaning of an active directory and what it is all about? How it is used? What are the functions of an active directory?

What is the chain of command of an active directories and how can an active directories’ changes can be audited?

Please enlighten me.

Nice question. Well, active directory is not a registry replacement just to let you know. It is a special purpose database which is designed to handle a big or large numbers of searching and reading operations and few or smaller updates and changes. Replicated, extensible and hierarchical, that is Active directory is all about.

Some functions of active directory is that it stores data like user contact data, printer data, computer or network configuration data and a lot more software. 

In active directory, you can add your own attributes and classes because it is extensible. If you are wondering what an Active Directory look like and what are the objects stored on it, please see the screen shot below:
