1 GB Extra Ram Installed: Laptop Screen Turned Black

One of my cousins tried to install an Extra 1GB of Ram into his New Dell Inspiron Laptop, but the Screen Stopped Working after the failed attempt. He then removed the Ram to check if it works without that, but it didn't worked.

He brought the laptop to me to find a solution. I've checked it, but I don't understand what is the problem.

The Laptop turns On, but the Screen remains Black.

Laptop is using Windows 7. I would appreciate if you solve this problem.

Thank you so much for your time.

Don't worry.  These things happen most of the time whenever memory modules are removed, replaced or added on motherboards.  The common problem is poor electrical contact between the memory module and the memory slot.  Try these steps:

1.  Make sure you have discharged any static electricity on your body before touching anything inside the laptop.  All you have to do is touch something metallic to discharge any built up static.  This is important as a lot of components get damaged by sudden surges from static electricity.

2.  Switch off the laptop and remove the battery to ensure that it would not suddenly turn on while you're tinkering with the insides.

3.  Carefully take out the memory modules.  Clean the electrical contacts with an eraser or a contact cleaner if you happen to have one.

4.  Insert  both memory modules and try to boot up the computer.

5.  If it doesn't work the first time, try it with only 1 RAM module at a time trying out different slots.

Hope this helps.

Hi There,

These errors happen most of the time replacing memory slots or adding them with the motherboards.  You can shut down the laptop and remove the battery and be sure that it may not turn on and be careful when you take out the memory modules. After some time insert  both memory modules and  reboot the computer. I think it will work.

Regards.
