A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw

Hello Guys,

I had Windows XP Professional SP2 and I recently updated my computer to SP3.

 

After updating my system I have installed Diablo2.

 

However I am stuck with the error displayed below.

 

 

 

Diablo 2 Critical Error

 

Error 22: A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw.

 

Is anyone aware as to what is causing this?

A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw

Hi,

Reinstall Diablo 2 and create a shortcut. After this right click on the shortcut icon then click properties.

Go to compatibility and click on run this program in compatibility mode for windows XP SP2 or lower.

This should solve the problem.

Hi,

Here are the things that you can do.

Download the latest drivers for your graphic card and update direct x.

Now go to run and type this "dxdiag" direct x settings will appear now test directdraw by using the video test. 

And see if the test is successful. 

If it completes without a problem then run Diablo again. I hope you find the solution.

Thank you my friends for your comments.

Peter Franklin, your solution is very helpful.

After reading your suggested solution, I have strictly followed your instructions.

I have downloaded the latest drivers and then typed the command you provided.

After a successful test, I am able to run Diablo again and haven't encountered any error ever since.
