Once the bad sector has been patched or marked, you will no longer hear the cracking sound and the drive will continue to operate normally again. To fix the error on the drive, download PC Tools Performance Toolkit and install it. Once installed, start PC Tools then go to “Recovery” tab and click “Repair Drives”.

On the next screen, select the drive designated for your old hard drive that you want to check then select “Surface Scan” and check “Perform on reboot” in the options. Click “Start” then “Continue”. Close PC Tools then restart the computer to begin the checking. See if this works.

What I do usually is run the test twice on the drive so that any possible unmarked bad sectors are checked thoroughly.
