Sometimes when I place my finger on the Home button of my new iPhone 5S, the sensor doesn't work and a message appears to try again. What must I do to encounter this problem? Is it a common problem with such handsets?

Problems regarding the sensor of iPhone 5S is a widespread problem. It does not affect all iPhone 5S .Its effects are somehow different from each complaints on the web.
 
According to Apple, fingers should be clean when using the sensors. There are also times you need to configure again or to re-scan your fingers for it to work properly. Although, Apple provided this solution, it is not guaranteed.
 
Another solution that you must try is to update to iOS 7.03 which fixes some sensor problems.
