I have Vista Home Basic and last night after i uninstalled Norton Antivirus 2008 trial and restarted vista, everything disappeared. Start Menu, task Bar,wallpaper and there is a black screen. The wallpaper and gadgets are displayed once i set them through control panel, but on system restart they disappear again. Right Click stopped working. only windows explorer, window was opened and I'm scared to close it as i might lose all access to my machine. all applications seem to work fine. Control panel also gives no response to click to taskbar and start menu settings.

Sometimes this is caused by a change in the registry.

To fix this:

1. Go to Start and type regedit. In the results, right click regedit.exe, select the Run As Administrator.

2. Navigate to the following Key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon

3. Select 'Winlogon' key.

4. Double click the entry 'Shell' on the right panel.

5. In the Value Data box, you should see Explorer.exe. If there is any other entry in this box, change it    to Explorer.exe and click
    OK.

6. Exit the registry editor and reboot the computer.

After uninstalling anti-virus, (be it a trial version or full version) from a machine that frequently access the internet or uses flash drives from other sources could really be harmful. In most cases, in the event that there is a viral attack on your machine, the best way would be to disconnect the hard drive, using external USB converter and scan it on a machine that has a powerful anti-virus. This way, you will not only eliminate the event of viruses, but will also allow you to confirm that your files and important data is intact. Once you really have made sure that your hard drive is okay, plug it back to your computer and see how it behaves. If the problem is the same, repair the windows on your machine and the error will be corrected. Regards.
