Restore default MP4 player to Windows Media Player

I have both RealPlayer and Windows Media Player installed on my computer running Windows XP.

In the past, when I wanted to watch an MP4 video saved on my hard drive, I just double-clicked on the file and Windows Media Player would play it.

Now, instead of Windows Media Player, it would open up in RealPlayer.

Because I prefer Media Player, I'd have to right-click the file, go to Open With, and then select Windows Media Player.

This is cumbersome for me since I need both software on my computer, but I prefer using Media Player for my MP4 videos.

How can I change the default MP4 player back to Windows Media Player?

You want to revert the playing of mp4 videos back to Windows Media Player.

There are many ways of associating video files to be played by only one specific media player. Here is one:

  • Right-click the video and then click or just point your mouse to Open With then click Choose Program.

  • Choose Windows Media Player from the list then click the checkbox beside Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

  • Click OK afterwards.

This time Windows will automatically use Windows Media Player when opening this type of file. If, incase, the associated media player for mp4 suddenly changed just repeat the procedure above. Sometimes when you open other media player they change automatically the file association according to their preset setting. This is normal and expected to happen in Windows.
