Sometimes, when I try to format the USB pen drive, I see an error which says,

“Cannot format the drive”. There are several reasons for this.

Now what should I do to solve this problem?

There can be lots of reasons behind this problem.

Some of them are:

1. Viruses or Trojans

2. Hardware problem

To format your pen drive, follow these steps:

1. Remove the pen drive.

2. Reinsert the pen drive and cancel auto run operation.

3. DO NOT double click the pen drive.

4. Run a virus scan on the pen drive.

5. Now, try formatting the pen drive.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

First of all try your pen drive on some other computer and format it there. If this is not working there is a fault in your pen drive not in your computer. The second thing to done is now if you have found that the problem is in your pen drive and not in your computer so run a full scan to your computer and make sure there is no virus in your computer and once done now run the scan on your Pen drive whenever you plug it in your computer. To scan your pen drive just right click on your drive and then you can select the scan command. Keep in mind that you need a valid antivirus program to scan your drive and make sure that it is up to date.

In case the above method does not work then you need to check for hardware in your computer make sure that your port is working properly and your pen drive has no hardware problem you need to solve any hardware problem in case there is one. Check your firewall settings also so that you are clear with your pen drive. Most of firewall also blocks the USB drive and that's why you need to check it also.

It seems that your USB is damaged or infected with a virus.

Try to scan it using your antivirus. If there are no virus found, try to do the following steps below:

1. Click Start > Run > Type diskmgmt.msc and then press the Enter key.

2. Select the drive that you want to format and then right-click into it.

3. Click Format.
