I want to know the possible causes why my computer shuts down automatically after opening it. It will work for about a minute then turn itself off. Does it has something to do with the ISA Shell Export Version I am using? I need help. Thank you.

Hi Louise

I think you made a mistake in spelling, it is LSA Shell Export Version, a component of Windows XP. Looks like you are infected with the SASSER worm. To confirm your worst fear go to C: root, do you see a file with the name win2.log. This will contain an IP address.

This is a worm that manages to run at start up and opens a port up and searches for any vulnerable system. The purpose of this is to spread itself to many systems as possible. This is what caused the LSA Shell Export Version to crash and eventually shuts the computer.

The SASSER is around for some time so your anti-virus should be able to detect it. Do a full scan on all the hard disk. Get more details about this worm

Hello Louise,

Have you been using the computer for long? Because its battery life might have be running out and therefore you will need to get a new one. Or if there some programs that you installed, or updates that are taking up a lot of power then they might the possible cause of the problem. In that case you will need to remove them either from the control panel or by restoring the system to a previous point before you installed those programs.

Otherwise it could be the ISA Shell Export that you are using. If it has a high a consumption rate or any other issue that is making not to work well on the computer then I suspect it is the one. Just remove it and see if the system works fine without it.

If you are using a desktop computer, the only reason why it would shut down by itself is overheating, nothing else. Other problems you may encounter with your computer related to hardware may cause the machine to automatically restart.

CPU or processor cooling fan
CPU or processor cooling fan

When a computer shuts down by itself, normally, you may see a message on the screen during the BIOS POST screen that the cause of the previous shutdown is due to “thermal” the next time you start the computer.

If you see a similar message on startup on the BIOS screen, you need to check your CPU cooling fan because it is a sign that it is failing or there is a problem. When the temperature of the processor is rising, it is the job of the BIOS to adjust the spin rate or cycle rate of the cooling fan.

If there is a problem with the cooling fan and it is not operating normally like it spins slower than normal, the adjustments being made by the BIOS will not work. When the temperature of the processor continuously rises and it reaches the limit, the system will shut down automatically to prevent damage to the processor and other hardware components.

In this case, you simply need to replace the CPU cooling fan to restore the system back to normal. Now, replacing the cooling fan is easy but it comes in sizes. Purchasing a cooling fan with an incorrect size may not fit the chassis and you will end up wasting money.

To avoid this, bring your CPU to a computer shop or computer store to help you look for a compatible cooling fan.
