Hi,

Let me know what broadband speed are you using right now? What's slow for you and what's fastest.
If your using broadband i honestly say that it is not guaranteed. That would be depending on the whole load.

As you mentioned that your speed is intermittent sometimes fast and slow. If you have a broadband connection at home that would be a shared connection to the whole community.

Since it is shared there are times your connection will be slow and fast.

Time              Connection
8:00 am – 11:00 am –  Fast
11:00 am – 1:00 pm- Slow
1:00 pm – 6:00 pm- Fast
6:00 pm – 1:00 am Slow
1:00 am – 8:00 am Fast
Broadband Technology and Speeds

Broadband Technology Download Speed Range Connection
Dial-up Up to 56kbps Phone Line
DSL 768 Kbps – 6 Mbps Phone Line
Satellite 400 Kbps – 2 Mbps Wireless Satellite
3G 50 Kbps – 1.5 Mbps Wireless
Cable Modem 4 Kbps – 25 Mbps Coaxial Cable
WiMax up to 128 Mbps Wireless
FiOS up to 150 Mbps Fiber
LTE up to 1 Gbps for mobile users Wireless

As you can see on the Figures there was an uptime and download on the internet connection if your using broadband.
This figures will be accurate in a whole world.

With regards to your modem problem. That could be also the factor why you are having fast and slow internet connection. Your modem is old enough. The processor inside your modem has already a damage. It process very slow.

Thanks,

In peak hours the network traffic is maximum and that's why you don't get better speed over the network and in normal hours when there is no network traffic then you get a good speed form your service provider. In this case you can either change your service or you can use a connection that best supports your requirements.

If you are using a modem then the speed may be vary over time because over a telephone network there is a lot of users and each one wants to connect that service because of these number of users you are not able to get maximum speed.

So you can buy another service to get maximum speed or you can simply wait for the time when there will be not traffic over the network.

To see your connection speed press ALT + CTRL + DEL form your computer at the same time and then go to network tab and you will be able to see your network speed over a period of time. Then you will be able to enhance your network speed.

It depends with the speed at which the broadband can upload and download files from the internet. If for instance the broadband that you are using has a download speed of about 20 MBPS, then you will not expect it to browse at the same speed as the modem if the modem has a download speed of about 100 MPBS.

Some of the activities that will make the broadband speed to slow down are:

  • Having many downloads queued at the same time.
  • Browsing using multiple tabs which take a lot of bandwidth when loading.
  • Uploading many files on the internet at the same time.

You will need to reduce browser activities, uploads and downloads for you to get the best out of your broadband.
