The clients are complaining that they could not locate windows update and many more. So I want to provide a support for clients on another forest. I know I need to install the Server Locator Point since it is essential to Configuration Manager hierarchy for helping clients find the information via AD Domain Services. But my question is from which forest do I need to install Server Locator Point? Will I install it on the SCCM server or in the client’s forest? Does anyone have an idea? Kindly please help me.

Configuration Manager: Installing Server Locator Point

In case the following conditions apply, then you will not need to install a server locator point, so check them out:

  • In case your active Directory schema for Configuration Manager 2007 has been extended, and if all sites in the hierarchy that you have been published to Active Directory Domain Services.
  • In case you are not currently managing either workgroup clients or clients from another forest.
  • In case all of the sites that you are using have been are configured for Internet-based client management.

But in case the conditions are as follows, then you can proceed with the installation of the server point locator:

  • In case the active Directory schema for Configuration Manager 2007 has not been extended, or not all of the sites in the hierarchy that you have been published to Active Directory Domain Services.
  • In the case where you have workgroup clients or clients from another forest.
