I am currently using Windows 8 on my PC. Is there a way to run XP on a virtual machine in Windows 8? Please suggest.

Well, there is an official Windows XP virtual machine software that you can buy and run on your PC. But using the older Windows XP mode software, you can do this for free with a few tweaks.

  1. Download ‘WindowsXPMode’ from the official Microsoft website. Make sure your copy of Windows 8 is also valid.
  2. Using the 7-zip application open this .exe file as an archive.
  3. Search for “sources/xpm” file in the archive, and extract this folder to your computer.
  4. In the extracted ‘xpm’ file, locate a file called VirtualXPVHD. Rename this file with the extension .vhd.

Open the VirtualXPVHD virtual machine in VirtualBox and you will have Windows XP running.
