Hello Michael,

You can review the event viewer which recorded the time that the Windows Media player crashed . You may also try to reboot the system. This would enable the isolation of challenges which are attributed to start up programs. After the reboot, you can try loading your DVDs. Here are some websites that can help: http://support.microsft.com/kb/947321, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows. Hope that this helps!

It’s quite unusual for a DVD drive to not play DVD movies especially if it is a fresh installation of Microsoft Windows. Try checking first if your DVD drive can read DVD discs as well as ordinary CDs. Insert a CD or a DVD disc on your DVD drive then browse the drive with Windows Explorer. See if Windows is able to display the disc’s contents.

If it works and your computer can display the drive’s contents then you probably just need to reconfigure your media player to use a different display mode since that’s the error in your program during DVD playback. Try using Direct Draw on your Windows Media Player to easily test it. Start Windows Media Player then right-click on the top bar, point mouse to Tools then select Options. See image.

You can also press the ALT key to bring down the menu. In Options screen, select Performance tab then click Advanced. See image.

In Video Acceleration section, make sure “Use overlays” is checked. In “DVD video” section, “Use overlays” should also be checked. You can also lessen the burden on your video card when processing digital media by moving the slider all the way to Large in “Digital video” section. See image.

When all are set, just click OK all through out then try playing a DVD movie. You probably get this error because you are using an old graphics accelerator that cannot or doesn’t support the settings you specified. To probably improve your DVD playback performance, purchasing a new graphics accelerator will greatly help.
