I am having strange trouble with my MSN. It says:

“Windows Live Messenger could not sign in because the ID you entered does not exist or incorrect. If you have forgotten the password, click forgot your password.”

At the bottom of the main Messenger windows shows the following error:

Error code: 80048823

Does anyone know the reason for this error?

If you disabled your firewall in the past, it may still be blocking the messenger. Try restarting it and see if this helps in anyway. If this does not, then simply uninstall your current and try having some less troublesome firewall. There are also chances that messenger does not have the proper permission to use the internet under effect of firewall.

Are you typing your password correctly? Are you typing it with correct case?

If you are using the MSN Messenger 7, click the tools menu > options > connection category. Click advanced settings button and uncheck all options and okay.

Check your IE Security settings. Open IE > tools > internet options > advanced tab > scroll to the security section and verify that “Check for server certificate revocation” is unchecked.  Also verify that Use SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are also checked.

Open IE > tools > internet options > and click delete files button and then delete cookies button.
