I am running Windows 8 on my HP Pavilion G6 laptop and something weird keeps on happening with the applications. Anytime I open an app, it only opens for like 3 seconds and then closes. This process has gone on for quite some time to the extent that I cannot use almost all apps. How do I correct this problem? I have tried restarting the computer but it has not yielded success.

This is a known issue with Microsoft Windows 8 and many users have already reported it and there seems to be no solid solution to it. There is one user who reported a similar issue but there is something odd about the problem. He said the applications suddenly close after a couple of seconds if the programs were started from the Start screen.

This issue doesn’t happen if the program was started from the desktop. So the problem is really unusual. The shortcuts of the program on both locations point to the same location of the program in drive C and they only differ in the location where the program is started. According to some information from other users as well as from Microsoft, if UAC or the User Access Control is not running or is not working properly, it may cause programs to run incorrectly or behave differently.

So, since you are having the same issue with your programs, check if UAC is enabled on your computer. To enable it, right-click on the lower left corner of your screen, go to Tools Menu, and then select Control Panel. Type UAC in the search field then select “Change User Account Control settings” from the results.

To turn on User Access Control, drag the slider up to your desired security level and then click OK. When you are prompted with a password, enter your administrator password to continue and then restart the computer.
