I am planning to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. I'm just concerned if upgrading would delete the current files I have in my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions.

An upgrade installation of Windows 7 will keep your files, programs, and settings in place. A custom to clean installation on the other hand, will not preserve your files, programs, nor settings.

If you plan to do a custom installation of Windows 7, be sure to back up your files and other information first.

You'll also need to manually reinstall your programs.

Hope this helps. Happy upgrade!

Just to add – since you are upgrading from Windows XP, unfortunately, your only option is to perform a custom installation.

This means that you should back up all of your files to an external location and gather the installation disks or setup files for programs that you want to use with Windows 7.

Thanks for clarifying that. I'll start working on my back up now.

Remember that custom installation is more complex, and it can sometimes take a couple of hours to complete. Good luck on your upgrade!
