What is the best instant messaging for debian? I got a mobile phone with a debian operating system and actually needs an instant messenger for chatting with friends and relatives. Can you suggest the best instant messenger which is probably compatible to debian operating systems?

Hi Eric,

In my opinion I recommend you to go with the known YM clients that already exists for a specific operating system, because in general it will work out of the box. You can easily update it if new versions are released, install it and so on. 

A best instant messaging (YM) is the tool that will fit your needs: chatting, voice or video calling, sharing files and so on (this depends on you).

For your operating system I recommend Empathy YM Client (https://packages.debian.org/sid/empathy). As a plus, using this client, you can take advantage of the multi protocol feature to use it with Facebook, Google, Yahoo and many others.
