I am  sorry are you trying to question 3G/4G or Iphone 3GS/Iphone 4G. Anyhow,

The difference between these technologies are only related to speed. 3G has a speed limit of 3 mega bits per second. The 3GS came along, where the 'S' represents 'speed' itself. The 3GS is twice as fast as compared to a 3G enabled network or device. A 4G enabled device is said to be atleast 10 times faster and according to the proposed stats it should be able to transfer 100Mbps to 1Gbps. Uptill now there aren't many devices that support 4G, the ones called 4G and most likely pre-4G because they still do not reach the speed proposed.

Iphone 4G comes with a faster processor than 3GS, and iPhone 4 represents a much larger hardware jump compared to the 3GS.  
 
The iPhone 3GS dimensions stand at 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm is slightly bigger compared to 4G's 114.3 x 58.7 x 9.4 mm.
 
The smaller size is attributed to smaller components, while the iPhone 4G's weight is due to the 16% larger battery. Aesthetically, the 4G is much more squarish and sports a flat back, compared to the 3G.
 
The phone memory also has an upgrade from the 16/32GB to 60/80GB variants. An educated guess should see the iPhone 4 automatically loaded with the OS 4.0.
 
The new hardware includes, a front-facing video chat camera, Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS), camera flash, Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad), and an Improved display.  
 
The phone itself saw quite a few changes- a flat back, an aluminium border around the phone, it is also smaller than the 3GS, has a 16% larger battery and smaller components.
