Hi there,

After I installed a game on my PC and rebooted the system I got this error. I pressed OK and everything is fine. The problem is that I have this error every time I open my PC. I have copied the DLL in my Windows folder and still, I even uninstalled the game and still the error popped-up. What is this DLL error? How can I solve this?

Thank you!

Hello Berta,

The problem you are facing might have caused by an older version of Norton / Symantec file or an unsuccessful / incomplete un-installation of any of those products. Other than that when something gets messed up during installation/upgrade/un-install this error message pops up.

Symantec Solution

A) You can check Symantec KB for manual uninstall procedures.

B) If it fails then you should contact the Symantec support and request for a Cleanwipe tool.

Norton Solution

For Norton use the Norton Removal Tool. Download and save the file on your local disk then run it from there. Don't forget to run it as admin, to do so just right click on the file then click on "Run as Admin".

The missing DLL file, vpshellres.dll, is actually not from the game you installed. The missing DLL file is included in the Symantec Antivirus like the Symantec Endpoint Protection or SEP, for example and if you have a Symantec product like Symantec Endpoint Protection, the DLL file probably got corrupted. You will probably not find it if you are using Norton Internet Security because I don’t have it on my computer.

To try and fix it, reinstall your Symantec Antivirus. Click Start, Control Panel then Add or Remove Programs. Select your Symantec antivirus then click Remove. Restart your computer when you are prompted then click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools then select Disk Cleanup. Select drive C then click OK. Check Setup Log Files and “Temporary files” then click OK.

When it is finished, restart the computer then install the Symantec antivirus back and then update it. After the update, restart the computer then see if the error comes back. If you don’t want to reinstall your Symantec product, you can also just download the missing file and install it. Download vpshellres.dll Library File. Download the DLL file from the Manual Fix column.

To install the DLL file, navigate to the download folder then unpack the ZIP file. Copy the DLL file to the installation folder of your Symantec antivirus or Symantec product. After that, restart the computer and see if the error appears. If it doesn’t work and the error comes back, copy the DLL file to “c:WINDOWSsystem32” and then try again. See if this works.
