Update failed on Microsoft Security Essentials.

My previous Antivirus was Norton but I am not satisfied with its performance in terms of detecting viruses. So I searched over the internet to find the best Antivirus that I can use. I found out that Microsoft Security Essentials has a good feedback on most forums that I have read. I downloaded and installed MSE successfully it also updates its definitions. But these following days, when I try to update it because I saw the last update was a week ago, it displayed an update error (refer to the image below). Why do I get this error although I have a fast internet connection?

Microsoft Security Essentials do not update itself through schedule. The MSE only checks for updates once a day or everytime a computer boots or if it checks that the updates are newest from the current definitions. If those are met, then the Microsoft Security Essentials will connect to Microsoft server for Anti malicious software download updates.

To make sure that your MSE gets the updates that it needs, follow the steps below.

  1. The Automatic Update service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service must be running on your computer. Access the Services through the Control Panel>Administrative Tools.
  2. Check the proxy setting if you are connected via proxy.
  3. Have the MSE to check if there are new updates before doing any Scan. The simple trick is to schedule a san via MSE settings and force it to check new updates before it scans your computer.
  4. Download and Install MSE definition Updates by using the engine and definition package that you can get for free from the Microsoft Malware Protection Center.
  5. Repeat the Manual Update of MSE a few times to be able to connect to Microsoft Malware Server. Possibly you are having a problem with your internet connection.
