An unknown error has occurred (-108). Adobe Illustrator will now quit

Hi,

I have Adobe Illustrator CS3 installed on my Mac but each time I try to open it I receive the error message "An unknown error has occurred (-108). Adobe Illustrator will now quit."

As I’ve been able to use Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop, I have been using Illustrator CS2 for the past year. My problem is that I now can’t open Adobe Illustrator CS2 either.

How can I solve this issue so that I can use Adobe Illustrator again?

Hello Debra,

The error like the one you are getting right now is sometimes caused by corrupted files.

The file that is most likely to cause that issue is the aiprefs file which holds most of the preferences.

It could also be possible that some preferences files have been moved to other files in the same folder, and therefore you will need to move the folder to Desktop, or you can just delete it.

The problem could also be with corrupted fonts, and therefore the error occurs when the fonts are being loaded for they cannot load successfully.

Regards,

Carl

“Error -108” in Adobe Illustrator is related to corrupted files or to corrupted fonts to be exact according to Adobe. The usual problem is the “aiprefs” file which contains all the preferences since Illustrator CS1. It has been noted in some cases that “error -108” happens during the loading of fonts but moving fonts away from the “Fonts” folder doesn’t help.

To fix the problem, exit Adobe Illustrator then open Windows Explorer and navigate to “C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobe”. Look for a folder called “TypeSupport” then move it to your desktop or to a different location in your hard drive. Next, start Illustrator again and see if it works. The “TypeSupport” folder has three folders in it: “AMT”, “Cmap”, and “Unicode”. The usual problem is with the “Unicode” folder.

One of the files inside is probably corrupt. You can do an experiment and move back “AMT” and “Cmap” folders to their original location then check if Illustrator works. If it does, try moving the “Unicode” folder back to its original location and then check if Illustrator works. If it doesn’t, remove the “Unicode” folder again.

Hi

The error 108 that you are getting when using Adobe Illustrator can be as a result of conflicts with other applications, for instance Norton, or they could be problems with TypeSupport.
