Hello,

I am a Skype user. This error suddenly appeared in my screen that said, Unhandled exception at 0x778e8c39 in Skype.exe: 0XC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000014. I don't know about this error.

I saw this error once, but I just ignored it since it did not display again.

Unhandled exception at 0x778e8c39 in Skype.exe: 0XC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000014.

Since I experienced a power failure, I did not manage to shutdown my windows XP home edition PC, the mentioned error message always pops up my screen.

I am not quite familiar in computer software troubleshooting, but my first approach to this error, is to reinstall Skype client software. After with my installation I rebooted my computer, same error message appeared on my screen whenever I will use Skype.

Please share some solution to this error.

Hi judithmads

Firstly, try this procedure. It may help.

Right click on Skype’s desktop icon, select Properties, Compatibility tab. Uncheck all options.

Another very "popular" reason for Skype crash is that some temporary files still reside in the Skype User folder. You can do this:

Make sure that Skype is actually not running on your PC (Quit or kill using Task Manager).
Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata%skype and press Enter. Go through the whole Skype User folder (including subfolders) and delete any files starting with “temp-“ or ending with “-journal” or with extension .lock. In same cases it may also be necessary to delete the shared.xml file, which you will find in the root of the Skype folder.

You might have problems with Firewall, antivirus or router settings.

so run antivirus scan on your Operating System and check setting for router and Firewall also.

It will surely help you.

Since your computer had a power failure, then the thing is it had to shut down without using the right procedure and thus affecting some of the programs that were being executed that time. And one of the programs that were affected was the Skype application. The remedy to that will be as follows:

  • Go to the control panel and uninstall the Skype program completely, since its registry files have been corrupt.
  • Get another Skype setup application and install it.
  • The new installed Skype application will not have the problems with the registry entries as it was the case with the old due to unprocedural shut down of the computer and it should work properly.
