Hello People,

I received an error message while opening a photo. My machine was frozen and after sometime I received a message "COM Surrogate has stopped working". I do not understand the error message.

If you have any idea for the issue, please help me solve the problem.

Thanks.

This problem is due to the fact that some codecs and other COM components aren’t compatible with your operating system.  DivX and Nero are the two most common causes of this problem.  There are a number of solutions that might help you.

If you have DivX or Nero, try upgrading the latest version.  If you’ve upgraded them and are still having problems, try renaming the file C:Program GilesCommon FilesAheadDS FilterNeVideo.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak.  You might also need to rename NeVideoHD.ax to NeVideoHD.bak

Disabling Thumbnail previews can also fix your problem.

If you use the ffdshow CODEC pack, this could be causing your problem.  Try using the ffdshow tryouts CODEC pack instead (can be found at http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/).

If you decide to uninstall Nero, this (http://www.nero.com/ena/?vlang=au) utility will help you completely uninstall it.

If you’re running Windows Vista, you can try installing the Vista Codec Package, which will update all your codecs to the correct versions.

You can use MMCompView to disable any codecs on your system.  This is a free utility provided by Nirsoft.

Turning off DEP for dllhost may also fix your problem.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.
