MS-DOS, released on November 10, 1983, was a first GUI which competed with the Macintosh OS. Windows (1.0 to 3.11) were merely programs run from MS-DOS with the help of Program Manager. Windows 95 was an OS which used a 32-bit user space and 16-bit DOS-based Kernel. It introduced many common features of Windows today such as Start menu, taskbar, File Explorer, Internet Explorer, etc.

Windows 98 got released in 1998 and Windows ME was last DOS-based version released in 2000. Windows NT 3.1 (1993) as well as Windows NT 4.0 (1996) was non-DOS-based OS. Windows XP (2001) was the merging of both Windows 95/98 and NT versions. It was released in different editions. Then, Windows Vista and different versions of Windows Server followed it. Windows 7(2009), Windows 8(2012), and Windows 10(2015) are the latest versions.
