Suggestions on fixing unknown video file

I tried fixing unknown video file but it is always a mistake.  I had downloaded a movie but I actually don’t know the codec of that movie but it says .avi at the end of the file.  Was the codec not compatible? Is there any idea on how to know the codec so that I can fix unknown video file and be able to follow it.  Help me fix the format as I always ended with “unknown”.  I had installed media info and yet when I import the file it is vacuous. Was my download unsuccessful? The property of the video was a video clip so I know something went wrong. Any suggestions on fixing unknown video file? Please let me know your thoughts.

Hello,

Hope all is well with you. The problem you are getting most likely is because you are using a media player that has no codec to play the type of format that your file is having. Try right-clicking on the video file, choose the "Select a program from a list of installed programs" option and then click ok. Select a program like Vlc to play your video file.
