I have had my computer taken over by malware. So I am wanting to wipe it all out and start over. I am thinking about going with linux this time. But I am not sure is it safer or is it easier to get hacked with it? Ways to protect your machine with linux?

Linux is more secure than Windows. It has many reasons, but first of all when you want to install a Linux operating system it creates a unique password that only you know.This is called root access password it increase your security. So, it is tough to hack your PC and you feel secure.
