Hi,

There is a file in my Drive F: that is giving me problems. It’s an application and its size is 1.08 GB, and it can’t be opened.

This file is useless, so I want to delete it.

The hardest part is I can't erase it. If I right click on the file, Windows Explorer fails.

If I am pressing the Delete key, Windows Explorer fails.

Error created in these positions:

Problem Event Name: AppHangB1
Application Name: explorer.exe
Application Version: 6.0.6002.18005
Application Timestamp: 49e01da5
Hang Signature: 423b
Hang Type: 0
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional Hang Signature 6: 06e5
Additional Hang Signature 7: 458f982b9000e842a9659b7a36dda7c1

If I am moving the file to Recycle bin or anywhere else outside its containing folder, Windows Explorer fails.

The file is eating up the free space on my drive, and I don’t know how to delete it. Please help me. Thanks.

Hello Monica.

It is possible that your antivirus attempts to scan the large file when you click on it. Try turning it off and see if that helps.

Another reason could be your Windows explorer is somehow corrupted.

I suggest running System File Checker first.

To run SFC, do the following steps:

1.  Go to Start > Accessories and highlight Command Prompt icon.

2.  Right-click and select "Run as." option from the context-sensitive menu.

3.  Enter the credentials for Administrator.

4.  An administrator-enable Command Prompt window will appear.

5.  At the command prompt window, enter the following command: sfc /scannow

6.  Wait for system file check to complete.

Restart Windows and try to delete the file again.

If that still does not work, try booting Windows in Safe Mode. To do that, restart your computer. After the BIOS screen disappears, press the F8 key. Select Safe Mode from the boot options. Safe mode ensures that only a minimal set of applications are turned on upon boot.

Hope this helps.

If you can’t delete a particular file and it consumes space in your hard drive and deleting it triggers different sorts of errors, try scanning your computer first for virus infection. Download Sophos Virus Removal Tool and install it. Once installed, start Sophos then wait for the virus signature database to get updated. When updating is complete, click to start scanning your computer.

When a virus is found at the end of the scan, remove it then repeat the scan over and over until it no longer detects a virus. This tool is not an antivirus so don’t use it as an antivirus because it doesn’t have real-time scanning feature. It is just a virus removal tool that you can use on demand.

You don’t need to uninstall or disable your existing antivirus because it works alongside any antivirus program you may have. You also cannot use it for a long time. It automatically stops working when it reaches the end of its usability period. If this doesn’t work and the file still cannot be deleted, restart your computer in Safe Mode then delete the file.
