The TP-Link W841 router is small in size and offers IEEE 802.11n (in draft 2.0) wireless connectivity. The wireless design options isn’t the most flexible, and the router isn’t suitable for covering large areas.  It is more suited for use in small apartments or a small home, but if those are your requirements, this router will meet your needs to the full.

It comes packaged with a CD that is very easy to set up by using the “Easy Setup Assistant” which allows users to follow the step-by-step installation setup. The setup is especially useful for beginners who don’t know much about setting up wireless networks and security settings.

You can remove the external antennas (which are rated at 3dBi each) and replace them with stronger antenna upgrades or extenders to improve signal strength.  At close proximity to the router, the average data transfer is about 6.6MP per second, which drops to about 6. MP per second when moved slightly further away (about 10 meters) from the router.  At further distances away though, this speed can drop to about half that and if there are objects placed between pc and router, the speeds may even drop lower.

The router allows for IP based bandwidth control, which allows administrators to regulate bandwidth between users that connect to the router. This prevents any one user from running bandwidth heavy apps which use more bandwidth.

It has support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption, in addition to AES and TKIP encryption.  It features a very basic firewall which can only be turned on and off. It runs on Microsoft Windows 98SE, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. It can also be configured to work with UNIX and Linux, as well as Mac OS X and NetWare. It has support for virtual servers as well as DMZ hosting, which makes it ideal for creating websites straight from your LAN.

In conclusion, the router is cost effective, is suitable for use in smaller areas with close proximity to the router, offers easy to setup instructions, and covers functionality that every user will require.
