The main difference lies between their performance:

Optical mouse:

Advantage:

1. They are trouble free for many years.

2. They can be used in almost in any surface.

3. The precision of optical mouse is greater than rubber ball mouse.

4. There are no moving parts to be broken.

5. No cleaning is required.

6. They are weightless.

Disadvantage:

They are expensive.

Ball and rubber mouse.

Advantage:

1. They are cheap.

Disadvantage:

1. Perfection and tracking ability depends on the surface it moves.

2. Mouse needs pad and special surface.

3. Cursor movement is not smooth to the user.

4. Cleaning of ball and rollers is required for smooth performance.

5. Heavy  in general.

I don’t see any difference in the performance if we’ll be comparing the ball type and the optical type of mouse. They just render the same accuracy in pointing the mouse pointer any where in the screen. But even if they have the same level of accuracy in adjusting the location of the mouse pointer, of course, they have advantages and disadvantages. It can’t be eliminated. In ball type, because of the size and weight of the ball inside, the mouse doesn’t move that easily even with a slight vibration.

Unlike with the optical type, placing it on the surface of a running CPU will cause the mouse to generate movement which is visible in the mouse pointer but is not noticeable in the mouse physically. The only problem with the ball type is that you cannot place it in a non-flat surface and still be able to use it. With the optical type, you can just use it almost anywhere. Like for example, placing it on the palm of your hand and create a movement will still produce movement in the mouse pointer. In optical type, there is no need to clean the bottom part or the area where the optic sensor is located. But in ball type, the rubber ball normally gets dirty and needs to be cleaned from time to time to properly use it again. This includes the 2 contacting sides inside the hole that directly contacts to the rubber ball. This is the part that greatly captures all the dirt of the ball and this too needs to be cleaned because the ball won’t roll if they are thick with dirt.

I was conscious about my ball mouse. I was thinking about using a ball mouse or an optical mouse because both of these have their own advantages. So I became hesitant. Reading this page, I have got myself free from hesitation. Now I have taken the decision to use optical mouse because it has more advantages way greater than the ball mouse. In fact, both experts have posted reliable answers but the answer that was published by Sharath Reddy helped me most. After carefully analyzing your post, I came up with a sure decision to use optical mouse for easy computing. Great job Sharath Reddy.
