I have two DDR3 RAM installed in my desktop. Each RAM is 4 GB. So the total RAM that should be shown in BIOS should be 8 GB but it only shows 4 GB of installed memory. How can I check if both the RAM sticks are working? Can it be a problem with the RAM slots? Do Random Access Memories have compatibility issues?

No, it is not the ram issue, it is operating system issue. You might be using the 32 bits operating system. It only supports the 4 GB ram. So you need to install the 64 bits operating system. Then in Bios it will show the 8 GB ram. If the problem is not solved then problem might be with the slot or with the ram.
