The full error reads, “Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network”. You may receive this message on Windows XP on HP Notebooks. To fix the problem, you need to specify the correct or required certificate to log on the network. Click “Start”, “Control Panel” then “Network connections”. Next, right-click the wireless network that is not connected then select “Properties”.

In the properties window, go to “Wireless Networks” tab then in the “Preferred networks” field, select your preferred wireless network and then click “Properties”. Next, go to “Authentication” tab then uncheck or de-select “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network”. Click “OK” all throughout. When you are finished, restart the computer then see if it works.
