Sound issue on my computer after Windows Update

This apparently is the result of an automatic Windows update.  Tests show an HD driver is now installed that requires an external microphone.  My external speakers test ok, but the only sound I get is from my internal laptop speaker.  How can I restore to previous state?

Hi there,

You can use the following methods

You can start by checking if the recordings are disabled from any of your playback device.

You can follow the following procedures;

  • Right click on the system tray located on the task bar
  • Click on the playback devices
  • Click on recording tab
  • Under the recording tab, right click on the device to enable it
  • Finally click on apply to enable the device.

Alternatively, Open the troubleshooter and follow this site

If that does not work you can update the drivers for the sound card by using this link

It is an update for a driver that is not working properly.

Hi Ferdie,

The problem you are facing is that you have installed new drivers (i.e. sound drivers) on your system and the only support external mic and not your internal speakers.

I would recommend rolling back the changes made in it.

This is how to do it:

1. Go to Control Panel –> System and Security –> System

2. An option 'Device Manager' is on the left. Click it.

3. Find "Sound, Video and game controllers" and click it.

4. Locate your internal speaker name, for example "VIA HD audio".Click it.

5. Under the driver tab do roll back driver.

If there is any non functioning hardware or if there is any programs or games that requires newer drivers, you should update your driver. To do this, check windows update. You can also change settings so that windows can check automatically for updates.

Letting windows to find updated drivers for any hardware is the best thing to do. Try not to update any driver manually unless your forced to do so 9for example you find the driver in some way but windows didn’t, or you need to install the driver from a CD or website. To manually update driver, you need to log in as administrator, and then follow these steps:

1. From the start menu, go to control panel
2. Click system and maintenance
3. Click device manager
4. Type password if you are asked to do so
5. Find the device for which you want to update the driver
6. Double click on it
7. Click on the driver tab
8. Click update driver
9. Follow the on screen instructions.
