I am using Microsoft office 2007, and after Microsoft released its 2010 edition I tried to install it. But  when I am installing it a problem has occurred and I have cancel the installation but when I again tried to install it says Microsoft Office 2010 encountered a problem during setup.

Then I can’t install it anymore and what is the problem here?

This type of problem occurs when you tried to install after a few minutes of cancelling the installation. Because there is a file named  Rgstrtn.lck is created when you had attempted to install 2010.

Then if you don’t delete this file this problem occurs. Because when you run another installation it founds that an installation file that I mention above is present and it terminated the installation process. You can follow these steps to remove that file for appropriate OS.

For Windows XP:

1. Run cmd then type cd "%allusersprofile%Application DataMicrosoft Help" and press ENTER.

2. Then type attrib -h rgstrtn.lck and then press ENTER.

3. After that type del rgstrtn.lck and then press ENTER.

4. Then dir /b /od /ad and then press ENTER.

5. At last rd /q /s "<folder names>", and then press ENTER.

( Folder names will be the name from the list which will be shown after you type command no. 5 properly. If there are more than one folder then write it with a space.)

6. After that exit the cmd.

For Vista and Seven:

1. Run cmd then type cd "%allusersprofile%Microsoft Help" and press ENTER.

That’s will do the work. For more see here

Hi George,

Its files and folder conflict issue. Whenever we install any software on windows it makes a folder in C:/Program files/foldername( there is an application name instead of folder name entry) automatically. Perhaps the new installation is conflicting with older folder which was not properly installed.

So first simply go to C:/Program Files and check the folder installed by MS office name. Name is a bit different in different office and windows versions.

But you can easily identify by its name. Delete the folder permanently. Secondly delete if any shortcuts created in “All Users” folder which lies in the system folder.

Now insert CD, setup will work fine.

Enjoy MS office.
