McAfee is against the idea of disabling antivirus to deploy WinXP and SP3. I am hopeful that the steps below will help you to get rid of your problems.

  • Click on the Start button below and go to Programs>McAfee>Virus Scan.
  • Choose “Access Protection”>”Common Standard Protection”.
  • Click on “Prevent modification of McAfee files and settings” and then click “Edit”.
  • Right below “Processes to exclude”, type using keyboard: “Fixccs.exe”, “Explorer.exe”, “Services.exe”, “Update.exe” and click on OK.
  • Now, click on “Prevent modification of McAfee Common Management Agent Files and settings” and tap on Edit.
  • The exclusion process must be repeated. You must remember to delete the exclusions that were set after you finish installing Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

The McAfee service you see running on the system is from your McAfee antivirus and since it is a security program, you cannot disable or stop the service itself. If you want to disable or stop McAfee, the only option available is to disable the antivirus. When you disable the antivirus, it will only suspend the real-time protection but not the actual service or the McAfee service.

To disable your antivirus, look for the McAfee icon on the system tray and right-click it then select “Disable” or “Temporarily disable” or whichever similar option is available. This should stop McAfee from monitoring your system temporarily. Real-time protection will be restored when you re-enable it or you restart the computer. If you completely want to stop the McAfee service from running, uninstall McAfee antivirus.
