Hi. There are some easy ways for the external hard drive remote access such as-

1) Remote desktop apps can be used to access the computer using a free-subscription program which lets us access the web browser by working from home. GoToMyPC is one such application.

2) If you want to access some data or files over the network, then, network attached storage can be used. These are servers which connect you to the home network via Ethernet cable.

3) Other method can be addition of an external hard drive to the existing home router. Although, it will slow down the speed but decrease the cost on the other hand.

4) You can also create a backup on the cloud. Dropbox and SugarSync can be used for easy access as well which support these computing services

5) If you do not want to make use of a third party solution, then, create a separate virtual private network and server. This method is likely to take up most of the time and is expensive but will also provide you with most power.
