Wass'up Lawrence, I believe I will be able to help you as best as possible in solving this problem. Connecting to two laptops or computers via a LAN cable is not hard so long as you ensure that the IP addresses are configured properly;
Go to My Network Places > Local Area network
Ensure both of the computers are on the same workgroup. Do this by right-clicking on My Computer -> Properties
Go to computer name tab and see what is written in the workgroup.
Change one computer's name in the other computer
Type I.P address 192.168.0.1
Repeat the process in the second system.
Here is the video description;
I hope this solves your query
Thanks
Am meant to understand that the other laptop being too old means that it might probably be using an older version of operating system, but not to worry as the most important thing here is knowing that both of these two laptops have different IP address.
Make sure that both of these laptops have LAN drivers which are operational.
In case they don't you can install these drivers using the motherboard CD that accompanied both of these laptops.
