When I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I was not able to perform back-up to an external drive. I read instructions on the internet and made sure that the Windows Defender is turned off and the external drive is NTFS. But the error 0x80780081 persists. How to solve it?

The error 0x80780081 persists if your VSC is disabled or there are some problems with the external hard drive. I have got two methods for you –

Method 1

a. Keep your antivirus/ Windows Defender disabled.
b. Press Windows + R on your keyboard.
c. Type services.msc and press enter.

d. Right-click on Volume Shadow Copy, and open properties.
e. Set the startup type to automatic.
f. Start the service.
g. Try to backup.

Method 2

a. Open the command prompt as admin.

b. Type diskpart and press enter.
c. Type select disk # and press enter (replace # with the partition of your external drive).
d. Type list partition and press enter.
e. Type select partition # and press enter (replace # with the partition that has a label called system).
f. Type del partition override and press enter.
g. Try the backup.
