Inspiron laptop does not have audio from internal speakers

My Inspiron laptop is not giving any sound. I already checked the sound settings and made sure the volume was up and the audio device was properly detected in device manager. I plugged in a headphone and it worked, but if I play it out from the laptop's internal speakers,nothing. What other steps can I try to isolate the problem? I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue.

After going through your post, it appears as if the laptop needs to be opened up. If the front jacks are working, it is an indication that everything is alright with the sound card and related software. Since you have already checked the sound settings, It appears your speakers have got disconnected from the motherboard. It definitely is a hardware issue. I suggest you should meet a technician at your Dell's support center.
