Hi, being a hardcore game, i have recently started hearing about the use of SSD hard drives to speed of the processing speed in laptops and desktops. What is the meaning of SSD hard drives. Can anyone explain to me the mechanics behind this drive as compared to a conventional hard disk. Also i would like to know how is the significant increase in processing speed attained. I have been keen to buy an Alienware laptop and most of them are equipped with hybrids of both normal and SSDs. Can i know why is the SSD components so expensive? Is it significantly better than normal hard drives?

SSD (Solid State Disk) hard drives are drives that utilize IC (integrated circuits) as memory for persistent storage. They contain no moving parts in contrast to common hard drives. That lack of moving parts is one of many features that gives the hardware its speed in terms of performance. It also makes the hardware resistant to physical effects. Though prices have dropped in recent years, SSD drives are relatively expensive due to two things: the IC technology employed by SSD and low consumer demand. SSD drives are also not reliable in terms of data storage; they can only be written to a certain amount of times. SSD drives do offer performance enhancements over HDD that make them worth considering, but they don't appear to be a good choice unless you are using your machine for certain tasks.
