How to setup IP cameras on my network?

Hi,

In my office we are in a private wireless network, where we have 30 laptop PCs.  Now my boss wants to keep an eye on our office environment, using camera from abroad or anywhere else outside of our office.

Is it possible? As I am in a private network, how can anyone access that camera from outside of my network?

Yes Badaldas,

You can set up an IP camera for that purpose and you will also need a public IP. I hope you are using a router.

  1. First, set up that public IP in your router.
  2. Then, create a DMZ zone to forward all incoming requests, to a specific private IP and port.
  3. Next  you need to configure that private IP in your camera.
  4. So whenever, you want to access your camera outside of your office, you must include the port number, i.e, 180.234.0.193:8080.

Hopefully it will work.

Well I think the above solution will work, but you must be careful with the port number, while configuring your DMZ zone.

Do not use any familiar port number 0-1024, try to check the manual. Let us know if it works or not.

Many thanks to atomicsoul and Souldn,

Yes I use a router for connecting my office network to the internet.  And I got a public IP from the ISP. Now I don't really know how to configure DMZ in my TPlink router and I am also confused on which port  I should use it.

Please help me on this.

Hey badaldas, don't be too afraid, just login to your router and under the NAT options you will get DMZ host option where you have to put your private IP address and port. And for a port  go to your camera manual, I am sure it is mentioned there.

Hope the best.

In case you don't know how to login to your router.

  • Go to your WLAN properties->click details->mark default gateway->
  • Enter the IP of your default gateway in the browser, there you will get a login pop up menu.
  • Give username/password which is admin for tplink by default.
  • Go to NAT->DMZ host->set private IP address.  Make sure this address is not using any of your PC.  Also put port number and save it.
  • Now go to the camera settings from your PC and configure that IP address and port number.
  • After configuration, put that IP and port, in your browser to check whether you can access it  in local network.
  • If its ok, now access it from outside of your network.

That's it.

Let me know the update.
