BartPE bootable CD is a practical tool that can be used to regain unbootable systems, recover files & settings and much more, and here are the steps on how to create a BartPE bootable CD.

1. You must download first the latest version of PE Builder from Bart’s site then, run it. It will extract all of its files and folders and will create a desktop shortcut to launch the PE Builder.
2. Insert your Windows XP/2003 CD into the drive.
3. Click the PE Builder shortcut located on the desktop.
4. After that, PE Builder will ask you to search for Windows installation files. Click Yes to have PE Builder search for the source files, or you may opt to type the path manually. You can also use a network location which contains all of the source files.
5. You may now select the optical drive from the list of devices appeared and then click the Build button. Wait for some minutes the you are done!

You can Start BartPE by following this method:

• Make sure first that your system has selected the first boot device on CD Drive, if not, set it up first on your BIOS. Insert the BartPE bootable CD in the drive and start the computer.
• From the BartPE’s start menu ("Go" button), you can launch the Run Command, file manager, Command Prompt and other system tools. Also, you can launch the Registry Editor by running Regedit.exe from the System32 folder of the BartPE boot CD, using the Command Prompt.

If you want to use BartPE to backup your Windows 7 installation on an ISO file, I don’t think that’s possible because BartPE can be used until Windows Vista only. Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10 are not supported. Also, the BartPE download does not come with Windows PE. You have to use a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 setup CD to create BartPE.

The PE Builder is also very easy to use. You just need to provide the path to the Windows installation files, folders, or files you want to include and the output folder for the ISO file. If you include files, you will find it in the root of the Windows PE CD. Unfortunately, BartPE seems to be dead and is no longer available for download from its official website.

The last update was released in February 2006. The PE Builder runs on Windows Vista but it is not possible to create a Windows Vista-based BartPE CD.
