Hi there.

I need to edit a couple of JPEG images.

I’m new to Photoshop, and I need tutorials on how to use the magic wand, lasso, polygon and magnetic selection tools in Photoshop selection tools.

What are they for?

First of all let me give the definitions of the tools you were asking:

Magic Wand tool looks for pixels which are of the same color and tone.

This means it's great for selecting large, solid blocks of color but when working on images where the difference between colors and tone isn't as obvious it can seem, to start with, that the Magic Wand tool isn't a great tool.

However, by making a few minor adjustments, you'll see it can be a useful tool to know how to use.

Lasso tool is the digital version of tracing an outline around an object on a piece of paper.

Polygonal Lasso Tool is similar to the lasso tool, except that instead of holding your mouse button down to draw, left-click on various points to create a selection with a series of straight edges.

While,

Magnetic Lasso Tool is a very handy tool for selecting areas which have reasonably well-defined edges. Left-click at the starting point of your selection and simply move the mouse along the edge.

And for you to apply all those mentioned, I would like to suggest the site for tutorials.

Here’s how the magic wand tool is used. This tool, when used, searches for pixels which have the same tone and color. This is best used for picking large, solid blocks of color but for first time users using this tool on an image with various colors and tones might give you a not so good result.

Even if this is the case, doing minor adjustments will surely bring you to a good start. There are several ways of using the magic wand tool and one is creating a transparent image or making an area of a photo like the background to be transparent.

  • Open Adobe Photoshop and then load your image.
  • Click on the Magic Wand Tool on the sidebar and then click the background of the photo you want to be transparent.
  • Next, right-click your picture then select “Select Inverse”.
  • After this create a new file and configure it to have a transparent background. To do this click File, New and then select Transparent under Contents and then hit OK.
  • Select your original image then click the Move Tool on the sidebar. After that, drag your image towards the newly created blank canvas.
  • Finally save the image as “.gif”.

For best results, watch the video “How to use Photoshop selection tools tutorial by TechyV” to guide you on the whole process.
