Hi ms. chet, I really love playing Counter Strike myself and I had actually experienced such error codes before. In many site you can found many ways to resolve your problem. Someone told me to add some RAM on my PC coz the game may needs more RAM than what I have; or try to re-install the game because re-installing games or other softwares actually fixes some errors done in first installation.
But the only thing that really work for me? That is to just simply rename (that is what I did, coz others delete it) the "steam.dll" that can be found on Counter Strike installation folder. That's it, very simple. =)
Hope this will also work for you!
Happy playing =)

Hi Chet,
Try reinstalling the game(leaving your saved game intact). Also, try to update your DirectX to the latest version. If the error still persists, this is something to do with your hardware, specifically the memory(RAM) or video card. You could buy additional computer memory(DDR3/DDR2/DDR) or upgrade your video card that meets the minimum requirements of the game.
For reference, Counter Strike Source Steam requires a minimum of 512MB RAM, DirectX 8.1 level Graphics Card(Requires support for SSE).
I hope this helps.
I also encounter that kind of error occasionally when shutting down the computer. The error is related to the memory but this doesn’t mean that your RAM modules are faulty. It is a fault how the program is processed in the memory which can happen maybe by accident or too many programs are running simultaneously.
Since you are playing the Steam edition of Counter-Strike, I don’t think there will be a problem because the game requires low resources. To make sure the game is compatible, make sure your computer meets the requirements. Counter-Strike supports Windows XP and requires 500 MHz or faster processor, 96 MB RAM, video card with 16 MB video RAM, and internet connection.
The game specifically requires Microsoft Windows XP. If you are playing it on a different operating system like Windows Vista or higher, try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP. Right-click the Counter-Strike game launcher on your desktop and select “Properties”. Go to “Compatibility” tab and check “Run this program in compatibility mode for” then select “Windows XP” from the dropdown list.
Click “OK” then try playing the game again and see if it works.
